International joint research workshop
As part of our multidisciplinary academic activities at the GBY Center of Excellence, we are organizing and hosting an international joint research workshop (Institute for Advanced Studies, HU and the Israel Science Foundation) in Jerusalem on 23-30 October, 2011.
This international workshop is dedicated to the 16th meeting of the Fish Remains Working Group and will take place in Jerusalem, with excursions to the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea (Eilat). Scholars and students from 25 countries will present their latest studies.

Deep Drilling at GBY
A deep drilling operation at the Acheulian site of Gesher Benot Ya‘aqov began in started in 8/06 and continued for two weeks. The aim of the operation was to extend the Pleistocene archive acquired by the excavations and to attempt to obtain a continuous core that would furnish extensive multidisciplinary research focused on the paleoclimate and paleoecology of the Upper Jordan Valley. The drilling project is supported by a grant awarded by the Israel Science Foundation (Grant no. 300/06) to the Center of Excellence Project, titled “The Effect of Climate Change on the Environment and Hominins of the Upper Jordan Valley between ca. 800Ka and 700Ka ago as a Basis for Prediction of Future Scenarios.” All logistic support, including storage and analyses, are provided by the Hebrew University.
Prizes
Dr. Nira Alperson-Afil was awarded the prestigious Polonsky Prize for Creativity and Originality in the Humanistic Disciplines for an outstanding doctoral thesis.
The awards ceremony was held at the Hebrew University on 9/06. Her dissertation topic is titled “Ancient Flames and Controlled Use of Fire at the Acheulian site of Gesher Benot Ya‘aqov, Israel.”
